Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on July 18, 1994, was raised in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was the daughter of a black dad and a white mother. She grew up mostly with her mom's family. Her skin color made her feel unaccepted in her early years. They struggled financiallyand were always shifting, having to leave their homes sixteen times to follow her father's job. However, despite this hardship, Russell mentioned how in her younger days "there was always an opportunity for reinventing yourself, creating something new."As a child, Russell was already artistically inclined, at first, she wanted to pursue a career in ballet. She later wanted to become an artist. At eighteen, she took her first acting class, and finally found her place. She used the money she earned from work to buy a car and drove to Los Angeles to audition. If her funds ran out, she would return home to work until she made enough money for a second audition. That routine went on for four years, until she got her first major TV job.
